Roundabout

'The Player' is game movie

“The Player,” rated R, starring Tim Robbins, Peter Gallagher, Cynthia Stevenson, Greta Seacchi and Whoopi Goldberg will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, at The Theatre at Washington, Va.

Griffin Mill (Robbins) is a slick young studio executive in Hollywood’s deal-making Babylon, but he fears he’s losing his job to slimeball Peter Gallagher. When he meets voluptuous painter, June Gudmundssdottir (Scacchi), things deteriorate between him and girlfriend/work associate Cynathis Stevenson.

There are wheels within wheels in this brilliantly self-reflective anatomy of the movie business. It’s a thriller as Griffin is also a killer, having murdered an angry screenwriter who he thought was sending him lifethreatening letters.

In coming weeks, The Theatre’s RAAC movies series will feature: “Housesitter,” Nov. 8; “Mediterraneo,” Nov. 15; “Far and Away,” Nov. 22, and “Pinocchio,” Nov. 29. “Sixty paid attendees to this movie are needed for the movie to pay for itself.
