The Students AgainstDrunk Driving have branched out at Rappahannock County High School. Last week they conducted a local version of the Great American Smokeout, sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
The smokeout program encourages smokers to give up the addiction.
The high schools smokeout program began with an adoption center, which opened at 8 a.m., according to Donna Salerno, an R. C.H.S. teacher and faculty advisor to S. A.D.D. At the adoption center a nonsmoker “adopted” a smoking student for the day in order to encourage the smoker to quit for at least 24 hours.
The participants were given candy, gum and lots of encouragement to make it through the day without smoking. One tangible reward for not smoking was a McDonald’s coupon good for one free meal, said Salerno.
In all, 50 students participated in the program, she said; 25 non-smokers paired up with 25 smokers and all of them reached their goal: none smoked for the 24 hours.
