Six men and women faced contempt of court charges last Friday in Rappahannock County Circuit Court for failure to appear for jury duty.
Judge Paul Brown, speaking quietly and deliberately, explained to the group the importance of answering a summons for jury duty. The six had been part of a 30-member jury panel called to hear charges of breaking and entering and grand larceny against James P. Walters on Oct. 19.
After striking off the panel those who could not serve for one reason or another, exactly enough remained for the trial to proceed, Judge Brown said. If one more person had not been able to serve, the trial would have been postponed, he added.
After talking to the six as a group, Judge Brown asked them to come forward individually to explain why they had missed the trial.
