The first phase of the program is a mini workshop held in the classroom, which concentrates on attitudes, behavior and working relationships. The workshop gives the student some idea of what to expect in the working environment, and some exposure to workplace expectations.
After the workshop, the students go on-site to the businesses for a period of observation. They study the other workers, the tasks they will be performing and begin establishing relationships with their colleagues. In class, after observation, they practice their assigned tasks to build their skills and to get up to speed before going on the job.
TTien the students go off to work. They spend one period a day at their jobs and then return to school to share their experiences with their classmates. “Lisa, Peggy and Thomas are looked up to by the other students because they are the first to be employed,” said Logan. “This program has made such a huge difference that I can already see a change in them. They seem much more self confident.” “I am extremely excited about the program,” said Tupper. “I firmly believe that this program will help prepare these young adults for the real world.”
