Smokey
the Bear
pays visit

October was filled with bear and fire poems, songs, creative stories, and books as the RCES first graders concluded their October whole language studies.
Smokey the Bear’s visit spurred interest in both unit topics. Game Warden Jim Bankston added interest by telling humorous stories of local bear adventures.
The moral of each story had to do with safety tips pertaining to wild animals. The students were “beary” interested.
Smokey the Bear’s message, “Help prevent Forest Fires,” led the first graders into their fire safety unit. Chester Gap’s fire chief, Todd Brown, shared a “real” fire engine with the classes.
He showed all the parts of the truck, sprayed water from hose, and, most popular, blew the siren.
Fireman Art Smith directed a role play showing safe methods to use when escaping from a burning building, and other safety tips. The students got really “fired” up during his visit.
The first graders are now looking forward to a Harvest Hullabaloo in November.
Mrs. Betty Ebom’s second grade class is busy getting ready for Thanksgiving. “We made two Indian villages. The day before Thanksgiving we will have a Thanksgiving feast. We made cups and canoes out of clay and painted them. We made teepees and totem poles out of paper. We made Indians out of clay,” said class-members Cori Alexander, Katie Reynolds, Zach Bridgman, and Tony Starks.
