This year marks the 200th anniversary of the White House, That remarkable event, the laying of the cornerstone of our nation’s First Home, officially took place on Oct. 13, 1792.
On the occasion of this anniversary, the White House Historical Association created a special commemorative Christmas ornament.
The twelfth in a series of ornaments, it features a reproduction of a lithograph of the north side of the White House, baked in ceramic. Adapted from a watercolor done by Augustus Kollner, it is the best early view of the White House in existence.
On the opposite face of the ornament is the text of the inscription on the White House cornerstone.
The base of the ornament is designed in 24K gold finish. It comes in a velourlined gift package which also contains a brochure that tells about the planning for and construction of the White House, gives an account of the cornerstone laying ceremony, and includes a brief history of the Executive Mansion.
