“Generally, the threat to the Virginia Christmas tree industry is minimal,” agreed Eggbom. “We’re more concerned about large stands of loblolly and white pine grown for the timber industry. The concern here is that the beetle could find its way to forests grown for pulp and sawlogs. And Virginia is on the border for both of these kinds of evergreen timber.

“But it’s important to keep this in perspective,” continued Eggborn. “The pine shoot beetle is no gypsy moth. It’s a pest. But it really won’t affect consumers, and we expect it to have very little economic impact overall,” said Eggbom.
