Virginia-grown Christmas trees are not among those affected by infestations of the pine shoot beetle which have occurred in northern states. Northern states in which the insect infestations have occurred include Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

The United States Department of Agriculture has imposed a quarantine banning out-of-state shipment of Christmas trees from infested counties in those states.
