This year, for the first time, Rappahannock High is working with local area businesses to help students with special needs transition into the working world. The Faith Mountain Company is working with Lisa Wines and Peggy Gallihugh, and the Rappahannock Fanners Cooperative is working with Thomas Brown.
Since September Lisa and Peggy have been part of Faith Mountain’s 15 person warehouse department working at packing stations, stocking merchandise and preparing orders for shipment. Thomas has been part «f the Co-ops’ warehouse team helping to load and unload trucks and to keep the warehouse neat and safe for all employees and patrons.
This work/study approach is called the Community Based Transition Program and is designed to help integrate students into the world of work. The two teachers who are implementing the program and are working with these students are Mike Tupper and Andra Logan. Tupper contacted the businesses last year, and was pleased by the receptiveness and support for the program.
The program, which is designed to ease the student into the workplace, is made up of several phases of training.
