Some suggested there is a problem with the perception of farming and farm work. “Most consumers view American farming as what it is in the Midwest,” one said, “boring, isolated, capital intensive, an industrial model. We need a new model, more deversified, closer to urban centers, providing an adequate living for a person growing food."
She suggested high school guidance counsellors should teach students that "agricultural labor is a good job to have. If we are less chemical dependent, we will be more labor intensive. Our goal should be to have more people working in farm jobs rather than fewer.”
Results of this and similar sessions throughout the southeast will be used to set up a series of workshops to take place next winter and spring and to promote several research projects on sustainable agriculture.
