The realtionship between the armed forces and the inauguration began in April, 1789, when George Washington was escorted to his swearing-in at Federal Hall in New York City by members of America’s fledgling military. The 1993 ceremonies marked more than 200 years of similar participation.
McGhee’s special duty assignment in the captal gave him a chance to get a close look, while off-duty, at the place where the nation’s laws are made and its heroes memorialized.
“The inauguaral process is differnt from the things I’ve done before and this is the first time I’ve, worked with members of the other services. I found that the protocol of the other services is much different from the Coast Guard’s. It was a real formal environment,” he said.
The Armed Forces Inaugural Committee gave McGhee the chance to work side by side with people in the uniforms of different service branches.
“I’d like to make the Guard a 20 year career. I’d also like to get back to a job that’s involved with maritime safety and I wouldn’t mind a tour in recruiting, either,” said McGhee.
