The numbers are in.
And the 1992-93 deer harvest for Rappahannock County was up substantially over last season’s, reflecting the trend statewide.
Rappahannock was one of the state’s best bear counties, with 31 reported killed. That was a dramatic increase over 18 bears killed the year before, bucking the statewide trend.
The county reported a harvest of I, 778 deer, best since 1990’s 1,756 and up considerably from last year’s total of 1,505. There were 45 turkeys reported killed, down slightly from last year’s 52.
For the entire state, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries reported a total kill of 200,446 deer, up 11 percent from last season. Most of the kills — about 127,000 — came east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where the season runs for six weeks.
The season west of the Blue Ridge runs just two weeks.
The top Virginia counties for deer were Bedford (6,826), Loudoun (6,093) and Southampton (5,550).
Statewide, turkey totals were II, 460, up eight percent from last year’s 10,534 but somewhat less than had been expected.
The state’s top counties for turkey: Botetourt (490), Bedford (371) and Bath (331).
Statewide, there were 482 bears reported killed, down significantly from last season’s 663. It’s thought that early hibernation may have played a role in the lower total.
