VIENNA — What if they gave a public hearing and nobody came?
That was very nearly the situation Monday night as the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries held a public meeting “to solicit input on hunting and trapping regulations for the 1993-94 and 199495 season” at the National Wildlife Federation Building.
The green blazers of the department’s officials well outnumbered the few members of the public who were in attendance.
Charlie Taylor of Herndon, the outdoor columnist for ArCom Newspapers, complained at the start of the public comment period that insufficient notice had been given about the meeting.
“I found out about this meeting at 2 p.m. this afternoon and my deadline for getting an announcement in our newspapers was last Monday,” Taylor said. “I called every sporting goods shop in Northern Virginia this afternoon, trying to get some people out here tonight. . . obviously, I didn’t do a very good job.”
Local media outlets were notified of the meeting through a press release which was mailed from Richmond on Jan. 25 and was received too late for publication in last week’s newspaper.
