There was also a discussion in fa£ vor of asking the state legislature to transfer some state sales taxes cot lected on outdoors-related items for the use of the game department.
Game officials also heard from another self-identified conservationist, Joyce Wilkinson.
Mrs. Wilkinson raised a number of issues, including the diminishing number of baby white swans now being counted on the Chesapeake and her concerns about the state’s bear population.
“Normally, 20 percent of the white swans coming down from Canada on the Chesapeake have been signets, the baby swans,” she said. “It’s down to two or three percent this year. I was distressed to hear that it was legal to shoot baby swans. I don’t know why anybody would want to do that. Maybe it happens by accident.”
Wilkinson, talking about the bear population, noted that “we’re always assuming that the more bears we kill, the more bears there are. Bears are very low reproducers and we can’t be too careful.”
The specific questions of changes in hunting regulations for the next season were discussed briefly.
Sterling businessman Joe Morga questioned why “muzzleloading gunjs are legal one week and illegal the next week. That’s like saying that robbing a bank is okay one week but not the next . . . why not let mui zleloaders be legal throughout th£ entire season?”
The game officials also heard comments in favor of the bear chase season, though Wilkinson spokb against it. “I’m not excited about this dog chase,” she said. “I’ve heard some real horror stories in the past about what exactly goes on in these chases. ... It doesn’t sound very sporting.”
Taylor expressed surprise afterward that no anti-hunting activists had attended the meeting, while noting, “with such short notice, it’s ^ surprise that anyone was here.”
