Purnell introduced her to modern American culture and art. On the eve of perestroika, Maryanne was allowed to emigrate to the U.S. in 1986 and be^me a U.S. citizen.
Her poetry has been widely published in Russia and in the U.S.. She received the Golden Poetry Award in 1988 from the American Poetry Association and has been an invited lecturer for television, colleges and religious communities around the U. S.. She gave a series of lectures at Harvard University on Soviet Culture and the role of women in that society.
The evening performance on Gay Street, Washington, will include a slide presentation of Robin Purnell’s paintings, some of which were included at her recent exhibition in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Maryanne Ozemoy will read excerpts of her poetry that reflect her struggle and eventual movement to freedom. A discussion with the audience, led by Senator Eugene McCarthy, will follow the program.
