The authority has received 11 apportions for the position. Six of the applicants have the needed certification. They decided to notify the other applicants that they might be considered for part-time employment as trainees after the operator is hired. • Currently the authority is contracting with Environmental Systems Services of Culpeper to operate the plant. ESS is receiving $2,800 per month.
At the end of December the authority had $45,500 in a savings account, $2,600 in a checking account and $3,650 in bills to be paid. Since the beginning of the fiscal year the savings account has been drawn down to pay fines assessed by the State Water Control Board (SWCB) and the increased cost of operating the plant.
“It’s very disheartening,” Chairman Eugene Leggett said. “We’ll end up burning everything we’ve got or have to go to a rate increase.”
The authority hopes to cut expenses by hiring an operator instead of continuing its contract with ESS.
