Local cattle farmers aren’t sure what to expect since the United States Department of Agriculture’s announcement that Virginia’s TBfree status has been suspended.
TB was detected in a Floyd County herd, which has since been destroyed. It is possible the state can regain its TB-free status by fall.
In the meantime the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services this “may” mean that any Virginia cattle shipped to other states must be tested individually for TB unless they originate from a herd that itself has been tested and accredited as TB-free.
Cattle shipped for slaughter will probably not be affected, but those shipped as feeder cattle to be finished in another state may be, and those shipped as breeding cattle almost certainly will be.
