Eugene Cognon
Professor Eugene Paul “Phillippe” Cognon, Ph.D, 78, of Flint Hill and Rosny sur Seine, France died Wednesday, June 29 at his home Oakley Cottage.
Funeral services were held at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Washington on Saturday, July 2 with Father Albert Verbeke officiating.
Interment will be at a later date in the Romilly sur Seine Cemetery, Romilly sur Seine, France.
Dr. Cognon was bom May 22, 1916, in Paris, France, the son of the late Andre’ and Marguerite Bourquin Cognon Who after losing a large gorcery whoelsale business in Mantes, France during World War II, started another successful wholesale drugstore supply business in Tonnere.
Dr. Cognon spoke proudly of his mother’s perserverance in this enterprise, started when both parents were in their sixties.
Dr. Cognon held a M.A. in English from the National University of Ireland and the Agrege I’Universite’ (a Ph.D.) from the Sorbonne. He has a long career in education.
His posts included Professor of French, Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland and visiting Professor of French at both Yale University and Connecticut College in New London.
When the Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly was organized by William and Pamela Lynn in 1972, Dr. Cognon was its first Headmaster and helped design the curriculum of the school.
