High school assistant principal Jackson Raines started work Friday, but he said he felt immediately at home. , ■
Actually he said he felt at home when he first visited the county before interviewing for the job.
He graduated from Montevideo High School in the Shenandoah Valley and returned there as a teacher and coach after he graduated from Virginia Tech in 1969.
He taught Industrial Cooperative Training, a program in which students attend school for half a day and work at various jobs for the other half of the day. As the ICT teacher he had the job of finding jobs for the students and working with their employers to see that they were doing satisfactory work on the job and completing requirements for graduation. He also coached football and baseball and reports he had winning teams.
He stayed at Montevideo for 11 years, and then the school was merged with Elkton High to form Spottswood High. He taught and coached at the much larger school for another 10 years, but it wasn’t the same. “At Montevideo I knew all of the kids,” he said. “Spotswood never had the same feeling.”
