She’s “one in a million” to her friends and co-workers. And at least one in 2,300 to the top executives of the National United Way organization.
Betty Roberts, Executive Director of the local Piedmont United Way, was selected from 2,300 United Way Executive Directors nationwide, as the sole winner of the coveted “Gus Shea Memorial Scholarship” for 1993. The award was presented during the Staff Leaders conferenece, May 21-24 in Louisville, which was attended by 1,300 staff people from local United Way organization from all parts of the country.
When her name was announced as the winner, Betty said it took everything she had not to cry! Her five years on the job flashed before her eyes: the problems, the solutions, the perspectives. “I realized then that all the hard work had not been in vain,” she said.
The Piedmont United Way serves the people of Culpeper, Fauquier, Orange, Madison and Rappahannock Counties.
Ms. Roberts attended the Louisville conference as a working member, and was responsible for selecting the top 100 exhibitors for the conference. Exhibitors represented United Way agencies from coast to coast. Over 200 had applied, but less than half were selected because of their “best practices” demj- - ■ - ~ -I
