2) Education standards should be steadily raised and facilities updated because education is the key to unleashing the potential of our youth.
3) New business and clean industry should be sought to provide new employment opportunities for our residents and their children. But economic expansion should not come at the expense of our clean air and water. These are far more important than a larger tax base. Tourism and the business that supports it should be strongly encouraged, since they provide revenue without the attendant major public services demanded by other industries.
4) Volunteerism, a hallmark of those who live in this proud and independent county, should be supported and encouraged as a continuing reflection of the strength and spirit of the county’s heritage.
5) Recognizing that none of these objectives may be realized without a vigorous, democratic local government, this newspaper will remain politically independent and actively investigate any abuse of public trust by public officials.
