Cutting the school budget to match the cut voted by the Board of Supervisors became contentious at Tuesday night’s School Board meeting when Superintendent David Gangel proposed that the position of drop-out coordinator be eliminated and a teachers’ aide be hired instead to supervise in-school suspension, saving about $22,000.
That position was originally eliminated in the current budget but restored when students, parents and interested citizens in the community lobbied the supervisors last spring to have the position kept.
The teacher handling in-school suspension and drug education and the teacher coordinating drop-out prevention were originally hired with funds from a federal grant. The grant ran out this year, and the School Board struggled with how to continue services: Feeling they had made a commitment to the Board of Supervisors not to continue the positions once they were not covered by the grant, the drop-out coordinator position was eliminated, and grant funds remaining picked up most of the cost for the in-school suspension position.
