Other School Board members Bryant Lee and Beverly Massie also spoke in support of keeping the position at least half time, and Dr. Gangel said he thought he could find the funds to pay for the position at least half time, but he would not know about further-funding for the position until other'staff is hired for the coming school year.
The board approved Dr. Gangel’s recommended cuts with the understanding that the drop-out coordinator’s position would be funded at least half time, and efforts would be made later to find funding to increase the position to full time.
The board heard a presentation by Paul Paratore and Jon Heddleston on introducing wrestling to the school. Mr. Paratore said he was asking only for approval to try to raise money to buy a mat for next year. He said he had between six and ten children participating in a youth program at Culpeper, but is sure that would grow if it could be in Rappahannock.
He said that for the 1996-97 school year he hopes to add wrestling as a junior varsity sport with varsity added two years later.
Dr. Gangel presented several suggestions for work on the six-year plan under “future visions.” He said the state will restrict student and teacher access to E-mail through the Virginia PEN. He said he hopes to explore grants for providing internet access.
He also said he wants to explore having a technical education center at the high school and relying on . Piedmont only for specialized programs. Future plans also include redoing the high school earth science lab, replacing the roof at the elementary school, working on the program in the upper elementary grades to offer more exploratory activities, and developing an alternative education program.
