Carla Theodore is giving a poetry reading at The Theater (Little Theatre?) on Saturday evening, June 3 at 7:30 p.m. Her program will consist of original published and unpublished poems, and works in progress, as well as two musical interludes provided by the Freeman Trio, popular gospel singers form the Promise Land Baptist Church.
Carla Theodore is a published poet, playwright and novelist. Her poetry chapbooks Rural Water and Peter and the Guru and her novel, Somebody’s Brother, are available in our library. Many Rappahannock citizens will remember her poetic drama, Next Year Jerusalem, which she produced at the Theatre in 1982. She has also served as Poet-in-the-Schools in Richmond and in Rappahannock County.
Before coming to the county with her three daughters in 1970 Rabbi Theodore had a checkered career as economist, labor organizer, educator, and writer. Here she started an intentional community and Summerhillian school known as Nethers Community School. Her three daughters, Rachel, Erica and Sandra, after graduating from NCS went on to become respectively a writer, a pediatrician, and a psychotherapist.
