On May 19 and 20 RCHS students will perform Tennessee Williams’ classic drama The Glass Menagerie at 7:30 p.m. in the RCHS auditorium. First performed on Broadway in 1945, the semi-autobiographical drama highlights the bittersweet struggles of a fractured American family during the 1930s.
Deserted by her philandering husband, the mantronly Amanda Wingfield struggles to sustain her family with little more than her steely, southern tenacity. Becky Gallegos plays the aging southern belle who has not yet come to terms with her disappointed hopes and dreams. Her inability to let go of her girlhood days in Blue Mountain forms one of the central conflicts of the play.
Supporting the family is her son Tom Wingfield, an aspiring writer who feels trapped by his job at a warehouse and by his stifling and overbearing mother. Andrew Van Horn plays the frustrated son who spends his spare moments writing poetry on the backs of shoe boxes and longing to join the merchant marines.
