The recent bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City has prompted an official memorandum from Major General Robert C. Dechert, Commanding General of the Virginia Defense Force, to all VADF commanders.
In the memorandum, MG Dechert expressed his concern that confusion has arisen regarding organized state defense forces like the VADF, and “self-styled civilian militias” which may have been involved in the bombing.
While politically-motivated "militias” are relatively new, volunteer defense or protective forces have existed for many years in most states.
