“It’s a shame though because the blossoms on the apple trees were so big and beautiful they looked like roses. They were the prettiest blooms that have been on the apple trees in years, now they’re all brown and shriveled,” he said. “The peaches were just past full bloom so that’s why they didn’t get damaged as badly as the apples.”
“It was just too cold, too long,” he said. “It’s the equivalent of taking a tree and sticking it in the deep freeze for seven hours.”
Mr. Hutcheson said the growers in the Shenandoah Valley were hurt worse because it was colder there, but that if it freezes here again it’ll be really bad for this year’s fruit crops. With cold weather due again toward the end of this week all they can do is cross their fingers and hope for the best.
The Hutcheson’s preserve their fruit and sell it. They’re famous for their brandied peaches, which many area Bed & Breakfast operations buy. “This year will be okay for sales but next year we’ll be hurt because we don’t have anything to put up.”
