On Monday 4-7-97 the Varsity Baseball team traveled to Luray. The Panthers (1-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning^ when Ervin Phillips (.286) and Jon Digges (.389) both singled. Tommy Settle (.357) lined a base hit up through the middle to bring home Phillips. With a count of one ball and one strike on clean-up hitter Griffin Ward, Jon and Tommy successfully executed a double steal. Ward connected with the next pitch driving the ball to the center field wall while coasting into second base with a stand up double and collecting two RBI’s.
Adam Bouffard (0-1) was On the mound for the Panthers. Adam got off to a slow before retiring the side. A lead off triple in the second inning posed a threat to the Panthers three run lead but Bouffard went to work easily getting the next three Luray hitters out. In the third inning Luray responded with three runs, two of which were unearned. In the top of the fourth inning the Panthers retaliated when Chris Sealock (.315) and Adam Bouffard (.278) both singled and stole a base. Alex Baumgardner knocked in Sealock to tie the score at four runs a piece. In the fifth inning with no one on base, Senior Captain Jon Digges unloaded a towering homerun blast to center field and reclaiming the lead 5-4. The Panther scooted across another one in the sixth and the Panthers now lead by a score of 6-4.
In the bottom of the sixth inning Luray answered with six runs of their own. Two walks, two singles, two errors and a homerun by Glenwood Veney. The distraught Panthers found themselves trailing 10-6 going into the last inning.
The Panthers who played with intensity and pride were not ready to accept defeat. Daniel Digges lead off the inning striking out but on a heads up play, advanced to first when the catcher missed the third strike. Ervin then walked bringing Jon to the plate. Jon lined a 2-0 curve ball into left field sending home Daniel and Ervin. The next two batters were retired but not before Jon went to second on a passed ball and to third on a ground out. With two outs and down by two runs, Andy Grimsely singled bringing home Jon, Andy then took second on a passed ball. Chris Sealock hit the ball sharply to the third baseman that was errored.
