only one rainy Fodderstack in the last 10 years. Perhaps not coincidentally, the times were the fastest in that ten years as well.

Whispeijet bus service (that doesn’t really mean anything; the marketing people thought that it sounded good) begins from Washington to Flint Hill at approximately 9 a.m. Registration in Flint Hill at the Volunteer Fire Department Fairgrounds starts at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 9:30 in time for the Race’s start at 10. Preregistration (postmarked by April 19) is $14, and is $17 the day of the Race. •

A botched start for the Race has become something of a tradition in Rappahannock County. There has been everything from a stalled starter’s vehicle to a misfiring starter’s gun, a malfunctioning bull-horn, and a lost timekeeper. The county’s crack team of starter strategists is even now devising this year’s debacle, although playing it straight might win out as the strategy for this year. Everyone is urged to come out to the race. Failing that, come out and enjoy the day by cheering the runners and attending the awards ceremony on the Courthouse steps about noon.
