After a year with New York jeweler, David Webb, who produced official gifts in the Kennedy and Nixon administrations, Kavanagh launched out on his own in the village of Westbury, Long Island, N.Y., where in 1996 he was recognized as ‘Businessman of the Year.’
Arthur and Peggy Smith of Sperryville were neighbors of the Kavanaghs’ in Westbury and after the Smiths moved here 15 years ago they encouraged the Kavanaghs to visit Rappahannock. They like the Smiths’ lifestyle so two years ago the Kavanaghs’ bought the log cabin in Washington. Bridget said she appreciates that people in the area are friendlier and more open than New Yorkers. The low crime rate is another attractive feature of Rappahannock.
Admitting only to being a perpetual 39-years-old, Kavanagh said he is at an age most people are retiring, but he loves his work too much to quit. -Hanging on the walls of the shop are photographs and letters of appreciation that praise his talent as a jeweler of distinction.
