Credit misplaced
Recently an article regarding The Rapport,
the Rappahannock County High School paper, was published in the Rappahannock News. The piece regarded the recent honor of a first place rating by the Virginia High School League to The Rapport. As last year’s editor of The Rapport I felt the article lead readers to believe that this year’s staff had produced the winning paper when it was in fact the work of last year’s which received the award.
Last year’s staff consisted of Anna Metcalfe, Adam Bouffard, Sarah Gentry, Naomi Smoot and myself. However, the article neglected to mention four of the past members who were key to the paper’s success.
While I believe this year’s staff has the potential to live up to its predecessor’s achievement, the work of last year’s staff should not be ignored. The long hours of production which were piled on top of class, sports, and part-time job schedules that lead to a fantastic paper should be acknowledged by the community as the work of the mentioned five. It was a disappointment to us and our families to read that credit had been misplaced. It was distressing to find that writers who grew not only as a staff but as a paper had not been mentioned for their work.
Anna Metcalfe, Adam Bouffard, Sarah Gentry, Naomi Smoot and myself were original members of the paper which was started in 1995 and continued to be the five person staff - who produced the following year’s twelve page paper. All of us should have been mentioned in the article. As journalists we put an immense » amount of heart and dedication in the produc- I tion of The Rapport in order to receive the award that was bestowed.
