book is intended as a companion to a well recognized textbook by Charles Jenny that Roach has used for years with her classes at Highland School in Warrenton.
The grammar-based text by Jenny is wonderful, Roach said, but the children were unable to translate with any skill. She wrote the book to provide longer, more exciting stories centered on the vocabulary and grammar corresponding with each chapter of the Jenny text, although, she said, her book can be used alone. Included are stories about Cinderella, Hadrian’s Wall,' St. George and the Dragon and Archimedes’ Bath.
The hardest part of writing the book, Roach said, was finding people to proofread it. Her project advisor, Diane Hatch, helped with the first 24 chapters, but she didn’t have time to proofread the next 30. Roach’s classes enjoyed helping find errors in the first drafts and have benefitted considerably in their ability to translate. Highland’s first senior class, the Class of 1998, scored a median of 610 on the verbal part of the SAT.
“Libellus Fabularum Latinarum” was awarded the Susan J. Hanna Award at Mary .Washington College and Roach vvas recognized in Who’s Who in American Graduate Schools.
Growing up in Tennessee and being an only child, she said she jumped at the chance to go to a boarding school at Fairfax Hall in Waynesboro for her high school years. Roach was only one of five students in her Latin class and she credits an enthusiastic teacher for her interest' and ability to learn the ancient language so easily.
