Republican group strong indications he will seek a U.S. Senate seat in the year 2000, but Susan Allen told me speculation may be premature. A little more than six years ago, she noted, her husband was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and the family lived on a dirt road in a house in Albemarle County surrounded by woods where wild animals often roamed.
When I asked if there was any way she could have imagined then in the space of those short years that her husband would serve 14 months in Congress and a full term as Governor, she laughed and answered, “It would have been impossible. Things just seemed to happen and here we are. It’s been a wonderful time and people have been very kind to us.”
Susan Allen thinks her husband’s success has come because, like his late father, Coach George Allen, he is a person who puts principle above expediency. She remembered him meeting a man who was a staunch union member and discussing an issue with him. “George listened patiently and then told the man that he just didn’t agree with his viewpoint ... the man shook his hand and said he appreciated his honesty since he felt politicians weren’t always honest.”
