The Ad Hoc Committee to Preserve Yancey Road presented, on Dec. 15, to the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors a resolution to remove Yancey Road, Route 621 offU.S. 522, from the current Six Year Plan and to name other Rappahannock roads to keep as they are — unpaved, narrow and meandering.
One hundred thirty-eight county residents have signed this resolution. Among them are Democrats, Republicans, old and new residents, landowners and tenants. Their common concern is to preserve the rural character of the county.
Why, in the face of strong opposition, the supervisors are determined to go ahead with the paving and widening of the last mile of Yancey Road has been the subject of much speculation. Some think promises were made to the three agricultural business interests on Yancey Road. But for two of them the road has already been paved from Route 231 to their driveways.
While everyone wants to encourage agriculture the defenders of Yancey Road find it hard to believe that businesses which have thrived here for decades, are now dependent upon the paving of one mile of country road. Perhaps the supervisors wish to accommodate the school bus, fire engines and ambulances.
