Virginia “Gina” Howard Bowman Drake, 86, of Warrenton died Dec. 6.
Born Jan. 13, 1911 at Kinloch, her family’s farm west or Remington on the Rappahannock, she was the youngest of four children born to Katharine Fox Bowman of Cincinnati and Frank E. Bowman, of Pittsburgh.
Her siblings were John Fox Bowman, Katherine Fox Bowman and Frank E. Bowman Jr.
The family moved to Warrenton in 1917 into a house built on Winchester Street by Mr. Hanback for Mrs. Bowman. There, Gina made lifelong friends with many former and current residents of Warrenton.
She attended Warrenton Country School, now the Training Center, and Sarah Lawrence College.
After the original home was destroyed by fire in 1937, her mother rebuilt a beautiful brick home on the site known as “Yorkshire House,” where she lived until her mother’s death in 1942.
Gina then joined the American Red Cross and served overseas for the duration of the war in Australia, Luzon, Manila and Tbkyo. She returned to Warrenton in 1946.
She married John B. Drake of Warrenton in April of 1948, and bought Judge Fletcher’s house, Yonderlea, on Winchester Street. They lived there until 1959 when they moved to Gibson Island, Md.
The family returned to Warrenton in 1974 when Gina’s brother John Fox Bowman became seriously ill. After his death they lived at Yorkshire House where she resided until her death.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Drake.
