John H. Toler
Foreign Service Officer
John H. “Jack” Toler, 76, of Warrenton, died Dec. 15 at home after a two-year battle with cancer. He was retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve and the Department of State.
He graduated from Beloit College, Beloit, Wise, in 1942, and immediately joined the U.S. Navy Reserve. He was commissioned an ensign, and served on active duty stateside until 1946.
His reserve was activated in July, 1950, and assigned to the U.S.S. Boxer (CV-21). The unit spent nearly a year in combat operations off the coast of Korea.
In 1952, he was assigned to the Pentagon. Following his release from active duty, he began his career with the federal government, working in the intelligence branches of several agencies.
He joined the State Department in the early 1970s, retiring as a Foreign Service Officer in 1976. He retired from the Navy Reserve in 1980, at the rank of commander.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy E. Toler, of Warrenton, daughter Linda T. Clater, of Burns, Tfenn.; John T. Toler, of Broad Run; James R. Toler of Fredericksburg; and William D.. Toler, of Mooresville, N.C.
He is also survived by his sister, Lucerne T. Paterson of Frankfort, 111.; seven grand children and four great-grandchildren, one of whom was bom Dec. 15.
The family will receive friends at Moser Funeral Chapel, Warrenton, on Wednesday, Dec. 17 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Interment with full military honors will be Thursday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. at Quantico National Cemetery.
