A week ago Saturday, while among a group seated at the dining table in the Executive Mansion exquisitely bedecked with Christmas greenery, I joked a bit with Governor George Allen and his memory got the best of me again.
I was next to Susan Allen, The First Lady, and across from the governor, and as wine was being poured and a fine meal served I recalled the days when Allen was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives and we were traveling together through Spotsylvania County visiting some of his constituents.
As I remembered it, it was early afternoon and Allen suggested it was a good time to break for lunch. I had visions of stopping in a nice restaurant, but he pulled into a 7Eleven where they had a two hot dogs for $.99 special and the Congressman and I stood there consuming hot dogs while people who recognized him came up to say hello.
The governor smiled as I told the story, but said I was wrong on one detail. The place we stopped, he said, was a Citgo station on Virginia Route 3. He knew this because he always filled up with gas there when he was in the Fredericksburg area since it was five cents a gallon cheaper than in his home
