Heddleston: Doing
it the hard way

In the process of choosing an Athlete of the Year for 1998 it became obvious that was not going to be easy to do this year. Two athletes from Rappahannock County High School stood out as exceptional examples of what can be achieved when not only talent but determination and love of a sport are focused toward being the best.
One of those athletes is Chad Heddleston. A quiet and modest young man, Heddleston isThe son Of Jon and .April Heddleston of Sperryville. They made it possible for their son to pursue his love of wrestling this year as Rappahannock • had no wrestling team for ^7-98.
And pursue it he did. He went from being the “wrestler without a team” to fifth place in the state and he did it himself.
Heddleston had participated for the three years prior to this, when there was a wrestling team at RCHS, and wrestles in the 103 pound class. He had been at a disadvantage in the past because he was lighter than the weight he wrestled at but did not have that problem this year.
“I was really disappointed when I heard they weren’t going to have a team this year,” he said. “I wanted to wrestle — a lot of people did.”
Heddleston believed he had a chance to do well this year but says he didn’t expect to do as well as he did. His father, Jon, said he knew his son could go all the way. “I expected him to go that far. Last year he wrestled at 88 pounds and won about 20 matches. He was consistent. This
