there long because it was getting late. We decided not to follow the trail but take a short cut. We got lost.
Eventually we saw smoke from a sheep herders stove. There were two men preparing their dinner. It was one of the men’s birthday and so they invited us to share it. There was a big pot covered with hot ashes and when it opened there were hot brown sourdough bread rolls. The food was very good. Then they showed us the way back to camp.
The camp lasted two weeks. About six of us and the leader went on a three day hike to two lakes and over a summit where there was a small glacier (snow that never melted). When we returned to camp one of the squad members, a boy named Ralph Perkins, had promoted an election and threw me out of office and got himself elected. I forced another election and got the job back.
Every year for three years I had to fight Ralph. He would grow a few inches every summer and decide he would get me. I am glad I never ran into him when he was 30 and had been picking up heifers for a living. He would have broken me in two.
Besides eating salmon, there was trout and grouse. Some guys caught trout with their bare hands. The name given to the grouse was “Fool Hen.” Their genes told them that the enemy came from above. They would always fly into a tree and stay there till we knocked them off with a rock. They were very good to eat. Each squad did their own cooking. It was a wonderful adventure.
