In accordance with an act of the General Assembly of Virginia, the Virginia Board of Education on Dec. 16, 1997 unanimously approved new guidelines for public schools with respect to recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, appropriate behavior of students not participating in the Pledge for religious or phisiolophical reasons, appropriate treatment of non-participating students and appropriate stipulation that all students can be required to learn the Pledge as part of our nation’s heritage.
Prior to the approval of these guidelines, Mrs. Stephen R. Hunter, State Regent, Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution, appeared at a public hearing before the Virginia Board of Education, pledging support of the Virginia Daughters for the proposed guidelines and urging their adoption as presented.
Her presentation follows and should be given careful consideration as we prepare to celebrate Flag Day on June 14, 1998.
