Somewhere out there lurks Mark Warner with his megabucks and dreams of being a big somebody in Virginia politics.
Warner, whose big spending brought him surprisingly close to Republican Senator John Warner in their Warner versus Warner face off a couple of years ago, is a Democrat in an increasingly Republican state.
But no matter. From all appearances he will seek his party’s nomination for governor in the year 2001 and, if so, there doesn’t appear to be anyone to stop him from getting it. Don Beyer might be tempted to come out of a forced political retirement but his fellow Democrats could hardly have; been inspired by the insipid campaign he ran as their nominee last year.
That doesn’t leave much of a Democratic field to challenge either Lt. Gov. John Hager or Attorney General Mark Earley, one of whom will likely be the GOP nominee for Governor about three and a half years hence.
