Starks: Setting a
higher standard

It was a case of against all odds for 1998’s Athlete of the Year Adam Starks, who shares the honor with Chad Heddleston.
Starks, who also played basketball and was on the cross country team, excels in track and is in fact working toward attaining a scholarship in that sport to enable him to go to college.
This year put him well on the road to that goal — he finished third in the state in 300 meter hurdles and was named to All State. He also finished fifth in the state for the 110 meter hurdles. RCHS track coach Jim Roszak said they have been approached by a local university but it’s still far to early for Starks to make a decision. After all, he has another year of high school and another year to better his already impressive record.
Starks admits the limited track facilities at RCHS probably hindered him from doing even better this year. He practiced with the hurdles but would just set them up at approximate distances to practice. Until the final tournaments for the season came around he hadn’t practiced for the correct distance the hurdles are set up at for the state competition, he said.
