sparrow was knocked off the nest box. Since then, the house sparrow has been absent from the yard though I hear his persistent “cheep, cheep” from Mr. Jett’s yard next door.

This is late for bluebirds to begin nesting. Where had they been before turning up in midMay? Was the first nesting attempt elsewhere a failure? Did the pair just move into available, unoccupied territory? There is always a certain mystery about bluebird doings. I suspect it is the unanswered questions combined with a certain aloofness of bluebirds that appeals to us and so entangles our emotions. It makes us protective.

The house wren filled a nest box in the side yard with sticks. This is a most persistent, insistent singer; it’s as if the water in a fountain has been converted into bubbling bird song.
