can afford $3 million, but we can’t afford another $5-7 million in five years.”

Citing Peter Kramer’s, of Washington, suggestion to the board last week that the county consider a meals and lodging tax similar to the Town of Washington’s, McCarthy explained that towns can hold public hearings and impose taxes. The county could impose a lodging tax under county ordinances, but a meals tax would require a referendum. He estimated that a meals and lodging tax would bring in about $55,000 to $57,000, and help offset pressure on real estate taxes. The “most compelling reason” for such a tax, McCarthy said, is that it would primarily affect nonresidents and pay for county services that they use but do not now pay for. Business owners who have to collect the money and prepare paperwork would also be affected.
