noted the Board of Supervisors’ concern about what people can afford to pay, even though there is no direct correlation between income, and county taxation. “Personal income has increased dramatically,” said McCarthy, “but people don’t like to see their taxes going up for any purpose. With the exception of the three percent fire levy,” he continued, “the entirety of the real estate tax goes to schools. Schools are the most important thing we do at the local level.”
In looking to the future of the county, Massie doesn’t anticipate any major impact of new developments or large numbers of people moving into county over next five to 10 years. The county’s total population today is around 7,200 to 7,300 people, of which about 1,100 are school age children.
‘The school system got a nine percent increase from the state this year,” said Massie, enough money to pay for the increased costs in the school operations budget without raising taxes.
