Daughters of the American Revolution presented a resolution to United States Congress to prevent misuse, mutilation or improper use of the flag. Forty-five years of efforts by the DAR and other patriotic organizations finally culminated on June 22, 1942, with the passage of the Flag Code.
In 1909 the DAR established a National Committee to focus its work with the Flag. That committee remains one of our most visible and popular committees today, encouraging respect and channeling the gifts of thousands and thousands of American flags each year.
So you will know before I say so that the Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution strongly supports the Flag and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. We support the proposed Board of Education Guidelines stating that the Pledge of Allegiance may be made part of the curriculum of the public schools. We understand the reasons that no student can be compelled to join in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance if he or his parents object on religious philosophical grounds, and that the school should not subject the dissenting student to
