Established by volunteers in 1983, Hospice of the Rapidan is a nonprofit group which has cared for over 1,200 area families, without charge, and regardless of their financial resources. Certification by Medicare allows the organization to provide skilled services, medical equipment and supplies which help patients live comfortably in their own homes.
Volunteers support the organization in many ways, and may choose whether or not to work directly with patients and their families. Those who work with patients are well trained to help patients and families cope with the challenges of endstage disease.
“Hospice volunteers are a breed apart, because hospice work requires a blend of sensitivity, creativity and initiative” says Martha Sukites, Hospice of the Rapidan’s volunteer coordinator. “Our best volunteers are very sensitive to the needs of others. They find that hospice work is a very personal and rewarding way to give.”
