The report, covering 197295, the latest years available, showed a .6 percent increase in 1994, but the income level was still below those of years 198790. The highest median AGI, $45,629, occurred in 1988. By 1995, it dropped to $43,869. In Rappahannock in 1995, the median AGI was $37,338.
From 1985-90, Rappahannock, with Cumberland, Loudoun, Bland and Culpeper counties were the five leaders in average median income growth. By 1991, they had fallen behind. Considered from a planning district perspective, the Rappahannock-Rapidan district accounted for only 1.9 percent of total AGI from all state income tax returns, or $43,169 per return. By comparison, the Northern Virginia district represented 37.6 percent, or $65,637 per return. The Regional Economic Information System database at UVA shows county residents made $169,694,000 in tax year 1996. Farmers throughout the county reported losses totalling $1,310,000.
