I have the honor to represent the 8,500 members of the Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution, and as State Regent in Virginia, I am a member of the National Board of Management of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The National Society was founded; in 1890 to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence, to promote the development of an enlightened public opinion, and to foster patriotic citizenship.
The first resolution of the National Society, passed at its first-Continental Congress, in February 1892, dealt with teaching American children to honor the Stars and Stripes.
That same year, in September, the Pledge of Allegiance, authored by Mr. Francis Bellamy, was published in Youth’s Companion. During the National Public School Celebration of Columbus Day in October 1892, the 400th anniversary of Columbus Day, the Pledge was repeated by more than 12,000,000 public school pupils, from every state.
