By Jan LaValley 2 Rappahannock News Staff Writer 2 You do not have to be able to draw to take artist Kitty Dodd’s Drawing with Colored Pencil class which is being offered Dec. 5 and 6 at Shimmering Meadows Farm Studio in Slate Mills. All you really need is a love of color and a willingness to experiment.
2 Dodd, currently the art director at St. Luke’s School in Culpeper, has been drawing She says since she was three. “I had a wonderfully supportive family and my aunt, who I adored, was a fashion illustrator and taught me everything. She took me under her wing and I was her assistant for many, many years.”
Dodd went on to become a fashion illustrator for Hecht’s, Kann’s and Woodward and Lothrup. She still does some frtee lance work. At one point she was even offered a job by Calvin Klein but, “I didn’t want to go to New York and who knew how big he’d become.”
Even with her background in illustration, Dodd didn’t discover colored pencils as a medium until about six years ago. She began by coloring in areas of pen and ink sketches and fell in love with the medium. “If you love color and pitting them together, this class will be great for you,” she Said. “We’ll use different techniques and mix and blend with solvent — it gives you a whole different look, like velvet.
